Minnesota Assisted Living Dementia Training for Direct Care Staff — Approved by the Minnesota DHS

This online training program is designed to help Assisted Living direct care staff satisfy Minnesota dementia training requirements for personnel providing care and services to residents with dementia. The course is built around Minnesota statutory requirements for dementia education, person-centered care delivery, and required dementia-related competencies for staff providing hands-on care.

This training covers required dementia education topics including:

  • Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
  • Dementia progression, symptoms, and resident-centered approaches to care
  • Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) for individuals living with dementia
  • Communication techniques and relationship-centered interactions
  • Identifying, preventing, and responding to challenging behaviors
  • Person-centered planning and service delivery
  • Supporting resident dignity, independence, safety, and quality of life
  • Applying dementia-informed care practices in daily resident interactions

This course is intended for caregivers and staff who provide hands-on resident care within Minnesota Assisted Living settings, including staff assigned to support residents living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Minnesota requires direct care personnel working in Assisted Living dementia care environments to complete initial dementia training and ongoing annual education. Completion requirements vary depending on role and care setting.
